Direct Sensor
Direct sensor systems are an excellent digital solution for most offices. The primary advantage of direct sensor systems is the speed with which images are acquired. The sensor is connected either by a wire or wirelessly to a docking station which converts the digital signal to an image. This image is then sent to the imaging software installed on the computer. Images are produced within seconds of sensor exposure. Most of the current sensors utilize cords instead of a wireless connection.
Sensors are positioned differently than traditional film x-rays. Due to the hardness of the sensor it is positioned further away from the teeth, more toward the midline of the mouth.
Many installations will have 2 different size sensors, a #1 and a #2. This along with a docking station in each operatory allows for flexibility in taking x-rays in the practice. Larger offices may require additional sensors to ensure that there is not a backlog of staff members waiting to take x-rays.
